The Normal Anomaly Initiative Defies Discrimination: 200 Free Tickets Unveiled for Black Queer Advancement Festival Amidst Texas LGBTQIA+ Human Rights Crisis
Houston, Texas – 2/27/24 – In response to recent comments by Texas Governor Greg Abbott dismissing claims of “systemic” discrimination against LGBTQIA+ individuals in the state, The Normal Anomaly Initiative takes a bold stand for inclusivity and empowerment. Today, the organization announces the release of 200 free tickets for their community to attend the Black Queer Advancement Festival (BQAF), creating safe spaces and fostering celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community in the face of adversity.
Amidst growing concerns about the human rights crisis facing LGBTQIA+ Texans, state and national organizations united to submit a Joint Allegation Letter to 17 independent experts, working groups, and special rapporteurs at the United Nations. In a show of resilience and strength, The Normal Anomaly Initiative aims to create a positive and celebratory space through BQAF, emphasizing the intersectionality of Black and queer empowerment.
The generous support of sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor ViiV Healthcare’s Accelerate Initiative, Premiere Sponsor HIV Vaccine Trials Network, Title Sponsors Allies in Hope, Human Rights Campaign, and the City of Houston funded by Houston Arts Alliance, Supporting Sponsors The Pride Study, All of Us LGBT, Pridenet, and the Houston Health Department, Ally Sponsors Counter Narrative Project and Media Partners ABC13 Houston, KBXX 97.9 The Box, and Outsmart Magazine, has made these tickets available, ensuring the event’s accessibility for all.
“I believe in the power of unity and celebration as a force for change. In the heart of Texas, our queer voices and vibrant celebrations will not be silenced,” said Ian L. Haddock, Founder and Executive Director. “The Normal Anomaly Initiative stands firm, providing a platform for the LGBTQIA+ community to thrive. The Black Queer Advancement Festival is not just an event; it’s a statement of resilience, empowerment, and our unwavering commitment to creating a world where every individual is free to be their authentic selves.”
The BQAF Celebration, themed “Homecoming,” is scheduled for March 14-17, 2024, with the highlight being the BQAF Music Festival on March 16, 2024, from 4 PM to 2 AM at Warehouse Live Midtown (formerly Rise Rooftop) – 2600 Travis Street, Suite 200, Houston, Texas 77006. The festival features former Destiny’s Child group member LeToya Luckett as the headliner.
To enhance the celebration and create more queer joy, Normal Anomaly is introducing a Friday Night Live event with special guest, LaTavia Roberson, another former member of Destiny’s Child. And a ballroom segment has been included at the BQAF Music Festival to honor queer, Black artistry and history.
