FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Houston, TX – May 7, 2024 – The Normal Anomaly Initiative would like to congratulate Joelle Bayaa-Uzuri Espeut, Director of Programming, for her victory in being elected as the Female Identifying Grand Marshal for Pride Houston 365. Joelle earned the esteemed title through a resounding vote of confidence from the community. Her selection underscores her unwavering commitment to inclusivity and empowerment within the LGBTQIA+ community.

At The Normal Anomaly Initiative, has been a beacon of inspiration and leadership, constantly breaking barriers and creating space for change. Her dedication to serving as a representative for the LGBTQIA+ community is exemplary, and her appointment as Grand Marshal is a testament to her remarkable contributions.

Notably, Joelle has been a trailblazer in various capacities. As the first Black woman of trans experience to serve on the board of Houston’s LGBTQ+ Political Caucus, she has demonstrated her commitment to advancing equality and justice. Her advocacy has not only elevated voices within the LGBTQIA+ community but has also fostered greater understanding and acceptance in society at large.

“Having the honor of being the 2024 Female-Identifying Pride Houston Grand Marshal is bigger than myself. It is about community, especially Black Trans Women who have oftentimes been pushed out or erased from Pride history and stories. This opportunity will continue the legacy of the Black Trans Women who have blazed the trail before me,” said Joelle.

The theme for this year’s Pride celebration, “You Won’t Break Our Pride,” resonates deeply in today’s socio-political climate, where LGBTQIA+ rights face ongoing challenges. Against this backdrop, Joelle’s role as Grand Marshal holds even greater significance, symbolizing resilience and unwavering pride.

The Normal Anomaly Initiative extends heartfelt congratulations to Joelle on this well-deserved honor. As she assumes her role as Grand Marshal, we are confident that she will continue to inspire, uplift, and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable world.
